Emergency Preparedness

Everybody needs to be prepared for a disaster. Preparing your home or workplace ahead of time to minimize damage during a disaster is called mitigation. There are many disaster mitigation steps that you can take to reduce the damage and injuries that typically occur during a disaster.

You should also stock up on some basic emergency supplies. Most of them are things you probably already have around your house. Since emergency responders are initially overwhelmed with requests for help during a disaster, at a minimum you and your household should be prepared to be on your own for three days (72 hours), but a week is even better.

Become familiar with the protective actions you can take to stay safe during a disaster, like shelter-in-place,or drop-cover-hold. Develop an emergency plan for home, work, or school and practice emergency drills regularly.
